Manchester United fans display pro-immigration banner at Old Trafford
During a recent Premier League match at Old Trafford against Crystal Palace, Manchester United supporters raised a banner reading “MUFC proudly colonised by immigrants,” directly responding to controversial comments made by the club’s minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, reports BritPanorama.
The display occurred as players returned for the second half, encapsulating fan discontent following Ratcliffe’s remarks in a Sky News interview last month, where he stated that the UK had been “colonised by immigrants” who were “costing too much money.”
The banner featured images of prominent players with international backgrounds, including current captain Bruno Fernandes, club legend Eric Cantona, and former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Notable figures from the club’s past, such as South Korean midfielder Park Ji-sung and French defender Patrice Evra, were also highlighted, emphasising the vital contributions made by foreign-born talent over the years.
Ratcliffe, whose popularity has waned since acquiring his stake in late 2023, faced backlash from various fans who took issue with his statements. Senior political figures, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, condemned his remarks. In response, Ratcliffe expressed regret if his words had “offended some people,” while Manchester United reiterated its commitment to inclusivity.
The Football Association reminded Ratcliffe of his obligations when speaking publicly but opted against imposing any formal sanctions, a decision criticised by the anti-discrimination organisation Kick It Out. The group remarked that such comments were “disgraceful and deeply divisive” and incompatible with the values of inclusion that football seeks to promote.
United’s boss Michael Carrick addressed the situation, underscoring that all club members bear a “responsibility” to foster respect and acknowledged the club’s global impact and its diverse fan base. He reflected on the pride and culture shaped by inclusivity at Manchester United, a sentiment echoed by many supporters who recognize the valuable role of immigrants in the team’s history.
