Manchester City comes from behind to beat Newcastle in FA Cup

Manchester City secured their passage to the FA Cup quarter-finals for an eighth consecutive season after mounting an impressive 3-1 comeback triumph at St James’ Park on Saturday evening, reports BritPanorama.

Pep Guardiola’s side found themselves trailing early in this fifth-round encounter but demonstrated remarkable resilience to overturn the deficit against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.

The victory marked Guardiola’s fourth win over Howe in five meetings between the clubs this campaign. Despite fielding a heavily rotated squad with ten alterations to the starting lineup, City produced a commanding response following their midweek Premier League draw against Nottingham Forest, keeping four trophies within their grasp.

Newcastle began the contest with genuine purpose and came close to doubling their advantage when Nick Woltemade’s header was cleared off the line by Nico Gonzalez following a weak parry from goalkeeper James Trafford. Harvey Barnes then broke the deadlock in clinical fashion, timing his run perfectly to collect Sandro Tonali’s incisive through ball before cutting inside and curling a superb strike into the far corner.

The hosts’ lead proved short-lived, however, as City gradually assumed control. Jeremy Doku’s low delivery from the left evaded everyone before reaching Savinho unmarked at the back post, where the ball struck his knee and trickled over the line in somewhat fortuitous fashion. City completed their turnaround shortly after the interval when Matheus Nunes delivered a precise cross from the right flank, allowing Marmoush to control and finish emphatically from close range.

Marmoush then sealed the result with a thunderous effort from the edge of the area that gave Aaron Ramsdale absolutely no chance of making a save. The Egyptian forward has now found the net seven times in just six appearances against the Magpies, having also netted twice in City’s Carabao Cup victory at the Etihad.

Guardiola celebrated the third goal with visible passion on the touchline, his animated reaction reflecting the significance of the performance. Following the match, Kieran Trippier offered a candid assessment, stating, “The first 30 minutes I thought we had done well. City are a top side and we have to take it on the chin today.” The Newcastle defender added, “City got the goal back and with the quality they have, we tried to press them but there’s no excuses today, we got beat by the better team.”

Both clubs will now turn their attention to European competition, with Newcastle hosting Barcelona in the Champions League last-16 on Tuesday evening. City travel to face Real Madrid on Wednesday in what promises to be another testing examination of Guardiola’s squad depth.

In the end, this match served as a stark reminder of City’s unyielding quality, showcasing the depth that allows them to navigate even the most challenging fixtures, often with style and flair. As the competition intensifies, the City juggernaut appears remarkably well-equipped to pursue their ambitions on multiple fronts.
