Man charged with attempted murder after shooting of New York Jets player
A US man has been charged with attempted murder over the shooting of New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd in Manhattan last month, reports BritPanorama.
Frederick Green, 20, from the Bronx, was taken into custody on Monday in Buffalo, approximately 360 miles from New York City, where he had been staying at his girlfriend’s flat, according to law enforcement sources.
Police confirmed Green faces additional charges of assault and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the incident. The arrest came more than three weeks after Boyd was shot outside a restaurant in Midtown Manhattan during the early hours of November 16.
Boyd, 29, had been enjoying a night out with teammates Jamien Sherwood and Irvin Charles, along with another friend. The group encountered strangers who mocked their clothing outside the Asian fusion restaurant Sei Less on West 38th Street.
According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, the men entered the establishment but departed after just five to ten minutes because “the vibe was off.” Upon leaving, they were confronted again by the same individuals, who questioned whether they considered themselves superior.
During the ensuing physical altercation, Green allegedly fired twice at Boyd, striking him in the abdomen. One bullet penetrated his lung and became lodged in his pulmonary artery. Boyd was admitted to hospital in a critical condition but has since been discharged.
The US Marshals Service stated that Green had “significantly changed his physical appearance presumably to avoid detection.” When officers surrounded the Buffalo property, he was observed looking out of a window before surrendering with his hands raised.
ESPN reported that the cornerback recently visited his teammates at the Jets’ training facility. Before signing with the New York Jets earlier this year, Boyd spent time with the Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals, and Minnesota Vikings. He has been on injured reserve since August following a shoulder injury sustained during pre-season training.
In a sport where fortunes can turn rapidly, Boyd’s journey underscores the unpredictability of professional athletics — where even an off-field incident can derail dreams and careers in an instant.
