Luke Littler's friend reveals darts star's growth amid fame and early struggles

Littler navigates the pressures of fame

Luke Littler has been candid about the challenges he faced adjusting to fame as a young darts player, with insights shared by his close friend Morgan Burtwistle, known online as AngryGinge, reports BritPanorama.

The 19-year-old garnered global recognition at 16 when he reached the finals of the PDC World Championship in 2024, where he was ultimately defeated by world number one Luke Humphries.

On the Double Tops podcast, Burtwistle discussed Littler’s early struggles, noting that he experienced genuine anxiety when thrust into the media spotlight. “He struggled at first speaking on camera and stuff like that. You can tell he’s a bit nervous,” Burtwistle explained.

Since those early days, Littler has evolved into a confident figure both on stage and in interviews, marking significant personal growth. “Obviously he’s got so much better now. He’s done that much media. You’d expect it,” Burtwistle added.

Burtwistle, who shares a strong bond with Littler through their shared interests in FIFA and darts, witnessed his friend’s transformation from a hesitant teenager to one of the sport’s most prominent young figures. He was present at Alexandra Palace when Littler secured his second consecutive world title against Gian Van Veen in January, making history before his 19th birthday.

Reflecting on that match, Burtwistle noted Littler’s remarkable composure despite a shaky start: “I was there for the final against Gian and he’s come in, he’s got his AirPods in or whatever, he’s practised a few, he’s had a margherita pizza, practised a few more then gone on.” After losing the opening set, Littler quickly reasserted control, delivering a strong performance that highlighted his resilience.

Now, Littler’s success continues to escalate as he builds on his championship win in 2026 with notable victories at events like the Saudi Arabia and World Masters tournaments. Additionally, he captured the UK Open title, one of the few major trophies that had previously eluded him in his impressive two-and-a-half-year journey through professional darts.

His dominant run includes a strong performance in the Premier League, where he secured victories on three of the last four nights leading up to this Thursday’s event in Manchester, punctuated by a stunning display against Michael van Gerwen that featured two 170 checkouts. For Littler, each victory not only reinforces his talent but also serves as a reminder of the pressures and triumphs that accompany rapid fame in sports.

As he continues his ascent, the world of darts watches with eager anticipation; Littler’s blend of talent and tenacity paints a compelling picture of a young man fully immersed in the high-stakes arena of professional sport.
