Luke Littler has made darting history by becoming the first player from the sport to earn a nomination for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award, reports BritPanorama.

The 19-year-old sensation will compete against a prestigious lineup when the ceremony occurs at Madrid’s Cibeles Palace on Monday, 20 April. Notably, he will face off against his sporting hero, Lando Norris, the reigning Formula One world champion.

Littler, hailing from Warrington, has achieved significant milestones after just two years as a professional player. His nomination represents a remarkable ascent, as he continues to solidify his reputation as a major force in darts.

In the past year, Littler has lifted six televised major titles and clinched his first world championship crown. Additionally, he has ascended to the pinnacle of the sport, becoming world number one, and successfully defended the Sid Waddell Trophy earlier this year, securing his status as the dominant player in the game.

His upcoming appearance at the Premier League Darts night in Liverpool coincides with the awards ceremony, underscoring a particularly busy and impactful period for the athlete. Expressing his excitement over the nomination, Littler stated, “Being nominated for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award is a huge honour, especially being the first darts player to get recognised on this list.”

He further commented on his desire to continue advancing the sport, saying, “I want to continue raising the profile of darts globally and bringing new fans into the sport. The nomination is a big moment for me and the sport of darts as a whole.”

Littler stands alongside exceptional talents, including Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Desire Doue, Brazilian tennis star Joao Fonseca, and Canadian basketball player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Notably, the shortlist also features 12-year-old Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi. Historically, previous winners of this award include sports icons such as Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Carlos Alcaraz.

This recognition not only elevates Littler’s status within the sporting circuit but also positions darts more prominently on the global stage, illustrating the sport’s growth and its appeal beyond traditional audiences.

As the ceremony approaches, the sporting community will watch closely to see how this young talent’s journey unfolds, a reminder of the unpredictable nature of sporting acclaim and the new heights that can be reached within even the most established arenas.
