Luke Littler ascends to Premier League summit after Night Eight display
Luke Littler stormed to the summit of the Premier League standings after a commanding display at Berlin’s Uber Arena on Night Eight, before throwing down the gauntlet to his title rivals, reports BritPanorama.
The 19-year-old world No 1 secured his third nightly triumph of the campaign, maintaining averages above 105 across victories against Stephen Bunting, Gerwyn Price, and Michael van Gerwen to pocket the £10,000 winner’s prize.
“Now they can all try and catch me!” Littler declared after leapfrogging Jonny Clayton at the season’s midway point.
The teenager now sits on 21 points, placing him in prime position for Finals Night at The O2. “Now I’m at the top, I don’t want to move from there – I want to stay at the top,” he added.
Littler made swift work of Bunting in the quarter-finals, racing into a 4-0 advantage before his opponent produced a 167 checkout on the bullseye to avoid a whitewash, with the teenager eventually sealing a 6-3 triumph.
His semi-final clash with Price proved more dramatic, reprising their Dublin final encounter from the previous week. The Welshman edged ahead 4-3, but Littler responded with a stunning 152 finish before reeling off three consecutive legs to extend his remarkable record against the two-time world champion to 13 wins from 14 meetings.
Against Van Gerwen, Littler established a commanding 3-0 lead courtesy of a 126 checkout, then landed two ‘Big Fish’ finishes in the eighth and final legs to complete a 6-4 victory.
Littler employed two different sets of darts throughout his Berlin triumph, switching equipment before his semi-final encounter with Price. The teenager revealed this was a premeditated decision rather than a reactive one. “I said coming in that if I won my first game I would change my darts in the second. That will get a few people talking!” he told Sky Sports.
His equipment sponsor Target had made modifications to his arrows, which Littler felt were not quite right initially but proved effective on the night. “With the new darts, when I was practising, I was hitting bull near enough every three darts at least once,” he explained.
Former Premier League champion Glen Durrant expressed astonishment at Littler’s unconventional approach to his equipment. “I am from an era where you played with the same darts for as long as possible but he is changing after an incredible opening game when he averaged over a hundred. He is incredible,” Durrant remarked.
The competition moves to Manchester’s AO Arena for Night Nine, where Littler will face Gian Van Veen as he pursues a fourth nightly victory in five weeks. Elsewhere on the card, Van Gerwen meets Bunting in the opening fixture, while Price takes on Luke Humphries. Clayton, following consecutive quarter-final exits, faces a rematch with Rock after losing to the Northern Irishman in Berlin.
