Darts sensation Luke Littler supports Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s potential return to Manchester United
Darts champion Luke Littler has expressed his support for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to return to Manchester United following the departure of Ruben Amorim, reports BritPanorama.
The 18-year-old darts sensation, who holds back-to-back world championship titles, shared his thoughts on social media, indicative of the ongoing discussion surrounding Solskjaer’s potential interim appointment. Littler, a dedicated Red Devils supporter, highlighted his enthusiasm by reposting a news article regarding Solskjaer’s candidacy on his Instagram, adding the phrase: “Ole’s at the wheel.”
Solskjaer, currently 52, is seen as a frontrunner to take over on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. He previously stepped in as caretaker manager after José Mourinho’s dismissal in 2018, subsequently being made permanent after a successful run. His record included 91 victories in 168 matches, translating to a win percentage of 54.17.
Despite his popularity among fans, Solskjaer’s tenure ended without silverware, with his best opportunity coming in the 2020-21 Europa League final against Villarreal, which resulted in a disappointing loss. Ultimately, he was relieved of his duties in November 2021, but momentum is building for his return to Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim’s short yet troubled spell saw a win rate of just 38.10%, marking the lowest for any Manchester United manager since Frank O’Farrell in 1971. Amorim also faced a defeat in a Europa League final, reminiscent of Solskjaer’s experience. Littler has previously indicated that the squad itself bears responsibility for the club’s performance issues, stating the need to assess which players fit the tactical framework.
Beyond Solskjaer, former midfielder Michael Carrick is a potential candidate for the caretaker role, having previously worked alongside Solskjaer and briefly managed the team following his departure. A decision on the management situation is expected soon, following the club’s fixture against Burnley, wherein Darren Fletcher will oversee the match.
The search for a permanent successor to Amorim continues, with names such as Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola surfacing due to their contracts expiring this summer. Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has also been linked to the role.
As the club navigates its managerial challenges, the question remains whether Solskjaer’s potential return could reinvigorate a team in need of direction and consistency, reflecting the complexities of leadership within the storied institution of Manchester United.
