Luis Rubiales egged by uncle during book launch in Madrid
Former Spanish FA boss Luis Rubiales faced an unexpected spectacle at a book launch in Madrid when his uncle pelted him with eggs, reports BritPanorama.
The incident occurred as Rubiales unveiled his memoir Matar a Rubiales (Killing Rubiales), in which he criticises “wokeness” and claims to expose what he describes as the “greatest conspiracy” in Spanish football history. The chaotic scene overshadowed the content of the 506-page book.
Footage from the event shows Rubiales attempting to dodge the eggs, with one hitting his jacket and another landing on his hand as he tried to shield himself. Reacting swiftly, he jumped from his seat to confront the attacker, only to be restrained by security. Shockingly, the assailant was identified as Rubiales’ uncle, Luis Rubén Rubiales, who has reportedly fallen on hard times.
In the aftermath, Luis Rubiales dismissed the incident, labelling his uncle as “deranged.” The police confirmed that the man was detained for criminal damage after a screen was damaged during the fracas.
Despite the incident, Luis Rubén appeared unfazed, showcasing a resounding enthusiasm upon leaving the courthouse after giving his statement. “I’m very well, it’s as if I’ve just returned from a 15-day vacation in Benidorm,” he told reporters, dismissing any suggestion of regret over his actions.
The family feud reaches new heights, with tensions having simmered for years. Luis Rubén is the younger brother of Juan Rubiales, who has publicly accused Luis of various misdeeds, including an obsession with power. Their disputes culminated earlier in 2023, when their mother staged a hunger strike to support her son, leading to a hospitalisation.
Luis Rubiales is presently appealing a conviction for sexually assaulting World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso with a non-consensual kiss during the August 2023 final. His current penalties include an £8,395 fine and a restraining order preventing him from approaching Hermoso. As he continues to promote his book throughout Spain, he also finds himself embroiled in a separate corruption investigation regarding the lucrative transfer of the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia.
For now, the image of an ex-football authority being egged onstage by his own uncle stands out as a striking moment in this ongoing saga, leaving many to consider the implications of such familial discord in public life.
