Liverpool reaffirm commitment to Florian Wirtz amid criticism of his Premier League adaptation

Liverpool state Florian Wirtz is staying put amidst transfer speculation

Liverpool have made it crystal clear that Florian Wirtz isn’t going anywhere, despite the German playmaker finding the Premier League’s physical demands a real challenge, reports BritPanorama.

Speculation from Spanish media hinted at a potential move to Real Madrid for the 22-year-old, especially after his difficult first season at Anfield. However, sources within the club have firmly shut down those rumours.

The Reds view their record-breaking signing as absolutely central to their plans moving forward, with insiders describing him as “untouchable” for the foreseeable future. Liverpool hold all the cards here too, with four years remaining on his contract and no release clause to worry about.

Not everyone is convinced by Liverpool’s confidence in Wirtz, though. ESPN FC pundit Craig Burley has been particularly critical of the player’s performances this season. “Let’s stop beating around the bushes with Florian Wirtz. I’m fed up,” he stated. “What he did in Germany is what he did in Germany. That’s gone. He’s so lightweight in this Liverpool team, it’s unbelievable. He’s so lacking conviction in the final third, it’s incredible.”

Burley further suggested the club might need to cut their losses. “He’s gonna eventually play his best football as a number 10, and if he doesn’t, Liverpool are gonna have to sell him. He’s been a little bit of a waste so far this season.”

The statistics provide a mixed bag for Wirtz this campaign, showcasing six goals and eight assists across 37 appearances in all competitions. His first Premier League goal didn’t arrive until late December, and it remains his only league strike of 2025 thus far.

Nonetheless, his ability to create chances has never really been in question. Wirtz will have a golden opportunity to silence his critics when Liverpool welcome Tottenham to Anfield on Sunday. The fixture represents a vital moment for Arne Slot’s side, who are grappling with the challenge of securing a Champions League spot as the season draws to a close.

As the demands of the Premier League will undoubtedly test the German midfielder’s skills, this match could serve as a pivotal moment in his adaptation to one of the world’s most competitive leagues.
