Lindsey Vonn suffers broken leg in Winter Olympics crash
Lindsey Vonn has broken her leg following a devastating crash at the Winter Olympics in Cortina, bringing a cruel end to her Games ambitions, reports BritPanorama.
The 41-year-old American’s run lasted merely 13 seconds before disaster struck, with the skiing legend sent tumbling violently down the slope after striking a marker on the course. Medical teams rushed to her aid as she lay stricken on the mountainside, her cries of pain audible to shocked spectators.
Vonn was airlifted from the Italian resort to a hospital in Treviso, where surgeons operated on her left leg to stabilise the fracture. Her US team has confirmed she is in stable condition following the operation.
Alarm grew as it was apparent her skis had failed to release from her boots while she lay in the snow. Initial contact with the ground caused her right leg to hit the slope, sending her crashing forward and striking her shoulder against the piste.
Vonn’s decision to compete came just nine days after she had ruptured cruciate ligaments in her left knee during a warm-up event in Switzerland. Despite the severity of that injury, she had declared her intention to race in Italy, astonishing observers by recording the third-fastest time in the final practice.
The crash ended her fifth Olympic Games appearance, as questions had already been raised about whether she was taking undue risks, particularly given the recent knee reconstruction surgery she underwent in 2024. During Friday’s training session, she clocked a time that was 1.39 seconds behind the fastest run.
Vonn’s family watched in horror from the base of the slope. Her sister, Karin Kildow, expressed her distress upon witnessing the incident, stating, “I mean that definitely was the last thing we wanted to see and it happened quick… she just dared greatly and she put it all out there.”
The downhill event was halted following the accident as competitors at the start gate removed their skis while awaiting Vonn’s evacuation. Accumulating 84 World Cup victories across various alpine disciplines throughout her distinguished career, Vonn has yet to issue a statement regarding her recovery.
As the snow settles in Cortina, it’s a stark reminder of the thin line athletes walk between ambition and injury, how even the most seasoned competitors can be caught off guard by the unpredictability of winter sports.
