Enzo Fernandez misses Chelsea’s clash against Manchester City
Enzo Fernandez will miss Chelsea’s Premier League encounter with Manchester City on Sunday, despite having personally apologised to manager Liam Rosenior earlier this week, reports BritPanorama.
The Argentine midfielder held internal discussions with the club following his absence from the FA Cup quarter-final triumph over Port Vale, marking the beginning of his two-match suspension. The ban stems from comments made during interviews conducted while on international duty with Argentina.
Rosenior confirmed the ban would not be lifted for the City fixture, stating: “He’s apologised to me, he’s apologised to the club, and we’ll deal with that after a massive game on Sunday.” He acknowledged ongoing challenges that Fernandez must navigate before returning to the squad.
Fernandez’s suspension followed remarks in which he expressed a desire to live in Madrid and admiration for Real Madrid veterans Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, raising questions about his commitment to Chelsea’s future. He had previously expressed uncertainty about his long-term stay at Stamford Bridge, further complicating his relationship with the club.
Rosenior elaborated on the seriousness of the situation while maintaining support for Fernandez. “It’s a serious meeting about something very serious. I’m not questioning Enzo’s character, I’m not questioning who he is as a person,” he remarked, reinforcing the need for appropriate discipline without excessive punishment.
The Chelsea manager also expressed hope regarding Fernandez’s prospects, commenting: “He won’t play on Sunday, but hopefully after that, he’ll be a massive part of the group moving forward.” However, his involvement in the subsequent match against Manchester United remains uncertain, with Rosenior noting that “there are still a few hurdles that need to be overcome that I won’t go into.”
Chelsea faces additional challenges ahead of the City match, as Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, and Levi Colwill are all unavailable, placing further pressure on the squad. City will start the match as favourites, keen to close in on Arsenal at the top of the Premier League standings.
This chain of events serves as a reminder of the intricate interplay between player conduct and club dynamics, highlighting how quickly fortunes can shift in the high-stakes world of football.
