Republic of Ireland pursues Liam Delap for international switch
The Republic of Ireland is making efforts to recruit Chelsea forward Liam Delap in a bid to persuade him to represent them internationally instead of England, reports BritPanorama.
Assistant coach John O’Shea has reached out to Delap’s father, Rory, regarding the possibility of switching allegiances. O’Shea remarked, “It’s in Liam’s corner, as they say. Let’s wait and see.”
Delap, 23, has represented England at every youth level from under-15 to under-21, but he remains uncapped at the senior level. His absence from the senior squad could be pivotal, and O’Shea noted the likelihood of Delap not being selected for the upcoming World Cup.
Ireland’s initiative comes on the heels of their recent disappointment after losing to Czechia in a World Cup play-off, where they squandered a two-goal lead. Manager Heimir Hallgrimsson acknowledged that the decision ultimately lies with Delap, emphasizing that “it’s a decision that is still just his.” He added that Delap’s lack of senior international experience might work to Ireland’s advantage.
Delap has previously expressed ambitions to secure a call-up to the England senior side, but eligibility for Ireland stems from his father’s international career with the national team. Rory Delap earned 11 caps during his own playing career.
O’Shea’s role in this recruitment effort is notable, having played alongside Rory and taking a personal interest in whether Liam will follow his father’s path. Ireland is already looking toward future tournaments despite their World Cup heartbreak.
Delap’s first season with Chelsea has been marked by challenges since his £30 million transfer from Ipswich Town, including a significant hamstring injury that ruled him out for 11 matches. Despite making his return in November, consistent playing time has been hard to come by, with two goals in 32 appearances this season, his last coming during a January defeat to Fulham.
Sport often blurs the lines of nationality, with decisions shaped by ambition and opportunity. Delap’s crossroads reflects not just personal aspirations but the intricate dance of allegiance that defines modern football.
