Lewis Hamilton addresses fans over digital detox
Lewis Hamilton has addressed fans who noticed his continued online presence despite promising a complete digital detox following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, reports BritPanorama.
The seven-time world champion, who initially declared he would discard his phone entirely during the winter break, provided a simple justification for his change of heart. When a supporter pointed out on X that his posts seemed inconsistent with the idea of stepping away from social media, Hamilton responded that it was “all about balance.”
This clarification came as Hamilton confirmed to another follower that his screen time remained “low,” even sharing a peace sign emoji in his reply. His original pledge to disconnect followed a particularly grueling conclusion to his maiden Ferrari campaign.
Speaking to journalists at the Yas Marina Circuit, he had expressed a strong desire to entirely unplug. “At the moment I’m only looking forward to the break, just to disconnecting, not speaking to anyone,” he had stated. This commitment followed a challenging period for Hamilton, marked by three successive Q1 eliminations during the final triple-header of the season.
Despite his emphatic declaration, Hamilton has maintained a visible presence across his social channels throughout the off-season. He shared photographs from a promotional appearance with sportswear brand Lululemon, and documented his holiday in New York with updates featuring winter training sessions and various social engagements. These posts prompted supporters to challenge whether his detox had materialised at all, with one fan directly querying, “sir this doesn’t look like a social media detox???”
Hamilton’s measured responses indicate a more flexible approach to his original commitment than initially suggested. The F1 icon’s first year with Ferrari has proved more challenging than anticipated, though team principal Fred Vasseur expressed confidence in their partnership. “It was difficult for Lewis,” Vasseur acknowledged. “I personally underestimated the step. It’s not that we are doing worse or better; it’s that we are just doing differently.”
While paddock speculation suggested Hamilton might terminate his contract early or even retire from racing, he remains committed to Ferrari as the sport enters a new era with sweeping technical regulation changes set for 2026. As the off-season continues, Hamilton’s balancing act between public engagement and personal retreat reflects the complexities faced by elite athletes in the modern age.
