Leicester City sack manager Marti Cifuentes
Leicester City have parted ways with Marti Cifuentes following a dismal 2-1 loss at home to struggling Oxford United on Saturday afternoon, reports BritPanorama.
The 43-year-old Spaniard exits the King Power Stadium after just six months in charge, with the Foxes currently 14th in the Championship table, sitting six points adrift of the playoff positions.
Saturday’s defeat marked the club’s 11th league loss of the season under Cifuentes, who was appointed last July to guide Leicester back to the Premier League after their second relegation in three years.
Cifuentes leaves with immediate effect, and the club now seeks a new permanent manager. Chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha acknowledged the difficulty of the decision in a statement, expressing gratitude for Cifuentes’ commitment.
“This has been a difficult decision and not one I have taken lightly,” he stated. “I would like to thank Marti for the total commitment he has shown during his time at Leicester City. He gave everything to the role and worked tirelessly to help us achieve our targets.”
In his stead, Andy King, a member of Leicester’s historic 2015/16 Premier League-winning squad, will take interim charge as the club searches for a permanent successor. King’s first match will be on Saturday against Charlton Athletic.
The club faces financial constraints, with expectations that only loan signings will be possible during the upcoming January transfer window due to ongoing profit and sustainability regulations.
Cifuentes’ tenure was marked by inconsistency, with Leicester recording 11 wins, eight draws, and 12 defeats across all competitions. The team has struggled to find form, with their best stretch featuring just two consecutive league victories and five draws in eight matches stretching into October.
As Leicester navigates this transitional phase, the selection of a new manager will be crucial in addressing both on-field performance and the mounting challenges off it, including the squad’s prospects for January. In the world of football, the search for stability often serves as a reminder of how precarious a manager’s tenure can be, especially amidst financial pressures.
