Leeds United condemns booing of Ramadan fast break by supporters during match

Leeds United have formally condemned their supporters for booing during a scheduled Ramadan fast break in the recent Premier League match against Manchester City, reports BritPanorama.

The club described the reaction from sections of the Elland Road crowd as “disappointing and unexpected” following the 78-second pause in the 13th minute of the match, which Leeds lost 1-0.

The stoppage occurred shortly after sunset, around 5.42pm, allowing fasting players to consume food and fluids at the touchline. Despite messaging displayed on stadium screens explaining the break, loud jeers could be heard throughout the ground during the pause.

Leeds acknowledged that this was the first time such a pause had been implemented at Elland Road for Ramadan observance. In their statement, they admitted that communication with matchgoers had been insufficient, saying, “In hindsight, we should have been more proactive with our communications in advance of the Manchester City fixture to explain to supporters that this was going to happen; there was a clear lack of awareness by some attending the fixture.”

Furthermore, the club noted that about a quarter of the stadium, including the South Stand, could not view the explanatory message displayed on the screens. They also pointed to recent controversial stoppages in other fixtures that may have contributed to the confusion among supporters.

In November, Leeds faced a contentious situation at the Etihad Stadium where a “tactical timeout” was called, creating similar confusion. A comparable incident occurred in the Sunderland fixture shortly before, which also prompted booing from spectators.

Leeds’ statement highlighted that broadcast footage showed players visibly confused during the pause, particularly amid the intense opening exchanges of the match. This uncertainty may have further compounded fan misunderstanding regarding the nature of the stoppage.

The club has now requested supporters to show respect during the upcoming FA Cup fifth round clash against Norwich City, where another pause is expected to take place. Striker Joël Piroe will again be one of those breaking their fast at the match.

With sunset in Leeds set for 5.56pm, the referee is likely to stop play around the 75th minute to allow participating players from both sides to hydrate and replenish. “On Sunday against Norwich City, there is an opportunity to show the very best of Leeds United, and that everyone is welcome at Elland Road,” the club stated.

Ultimately, this incident underscores how sporting events can intersect with cultural practices, challenging clubs to better prepare and communicate in an increasingly diverse society.
