Lando Norris has become Britain’s newest Formula 1 world champion, yet his 2025 triumph has sparked considerable debate about the nature of his achievement, reports BritPanorama.
The McLaren driver secured his maiden title by the slenderest of margins, finishing just two points ahead of Max Verstappen after a dramatic season finale in Abu Dhabi. The 26-year-old’s victory ended the Dutchman’s run of four consecutive championships, making Norris the 35th driver in history to claim the sport’s ultimate prize.
However, the dominance of McLaren’s MCL39 machinery throughout the campaign has prompted former champions and racing figures to question whether the car, rather than the driver, deserves primary credit. Notably, Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 world champion, provided insight into Norris’s transformation, pinpointing the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as a pivotal moment.
Villeneuve noted that prior to Baku, Norris had displayed a tendency to be overly self-critical. He praised the British driver’s change in attitude thereafter, stating that from that point on, he adopted “more like a winner in his attitude.” Meanwhile, Colombian former driver Juan Pablo Montoya struck a more provocative tone, acknowledging Norris’s achievement but suggesting that “anybody in that car could have been world champion.”
Montoya reflected on the parallels with Verstappen’s previous dominance, commenting on how the car’s apparent advantage played a crucial role in Norris’s success. He conceded, however, that Norris improved significantly as the season unfolded, indicating that the team needed time to maximise their performance with the MCL39.
Norris himself has dismissed the ongoing debate about his standing relative to Verstappen, asserting that his motivation lies beyond comparisons. After clinching the title with a third-place finish at Yas Marina, he stated: “My motivation is not here to prove I’m better than someone else.” He expressed indifference to external views, emphasising personal fulfilment over narrative-driven rivalry.
