Lando Norris addresses F1 strategy controversy after fourth-place finish in Qatar Grand Prix

Lando Norris dismisses Qatar Grand Prix strategy criticism

Lando Norris has dismissed suggestions that McLaren’s costly strategic misjudgment in the Qatar Grand Prix was the result of the team’s much-discussed “papaya rules,” insisting that fairness protocols between himself and Oscar Piastri played no part in the call that left both drivers exposed to Max Verstappen, reports BritPanorama.

The controversy arose on lap seven under the safety car at Lusail, when McLaren opted not to pit either race leader Piastri or Norris, who was then running third. This decision placed both McLaren cars at an immediate disadvantage compared to Verstappen, who made a timely pit stop.

With strict 25-lap tyre-stint limits imposed for safety reasons, McLaren’s lack of action forced them to undertake tyre changes at full racing speed. In contrast, Verstappen completed his second stop on lap 32—his only green-flag pit sequence of the race—allowing him to efficiently manage both service windows.

The outcome saw Piastri unable to challenge Verstappen on track, ultimately closing to 7.9 seconds but finishing behind him, while Norris secured a distant fourth. This misjudgment has led to a rare three-way championship decider in the upcoming finale in Abu Dhabi. Norris leads on 408 points, followed by Verstappen at 396 and Piastri at 392, making it the first title showdown featuring three contenders since 2010.

McLaren chief Zak Brown had previously stressed his commitment to team fairness, indicating he would prefer to lose a title to Verstappen than manipulate strategy to favour either driver. Norris, however, rejected the notion that the team’s decisions were influenced by internal fairness rules during a conversation with Sky Sports F1, stating, “Nope, it’s got nothing to do with it. Everyone keeps thinking that, but it has got nothing to do with it.”

Norris noted that the team had taken a gamble with their strategy that ultimately proved incorrect. He expressed disappointment, acknowledging that the decision cost Piastri a potential win and himself second place, remarking, “I feel like we were the ones who took the gamble… we shouldn’t have done it.”

Despite the misstep, Norris acknowledged the superior execution from Red Bull, stating, “They did a better job as a team and made the right call.” Looking ahead, Norris has the chance to secure the world championship by finishing third or better, or by finishing ahead of both Verstappen and Piastri. However, the result from Qatar has ramped up the pressure on McLaren at a critical moment.

As the championship battle approaches its climax, the stakes are high, and every decision counts. What remains to be seen is how McLaren will respond under the weight of expectation in Abu Dhabi.
