Lando Norris reacts to George Russell’s dominant qualifying performance

George Russell secured pole position for the Australian Grand Prix, finishing 0.293 seconds ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli, which highlights Mercedes’ strong start in the championship race, reports BritPanorama.

Russell’s performance was particularly striking as he outpaced the nearest non-Mercedes competitor by nearly eight-tenths of a second. Reflecting on his achievement, Russell stated, “It was a great day, we knew there was a lot of potential in the car, but until you get to the first Saturday of this season, you never know.”

He praised Antonelli’s presence alongside him, noting, “Really happy to have Kimi here next to me as well. All in all a great day. It’s not easy to drive, it’s not easy for some of the fans to understand. I am excited for the race tomorrow and I think it can bring some quite exciting racing. It’s always amazing every time we come to Melbourne. Hopefully we can deliver a good race.”

Defending world champion Lando Norris will start his title defence from sixth on the grid after a challenging qualifying session where he struggled to find pace. He ended up nearly a full second behind Russell, with McLaren’s mechanics having to use duct tape to repair his front wing following damage earlier in the session. Speaking on his British rival, Norris remarked, “I think George will be the only one say it’s nice, to be honest.”

Norris also commented on his own qualifying laps, stating, “Just inconsistent, one lap better, one lap not. It’s just tricky. I’ve been a little bit on the back foot. In some ways it’s an expectation at the start of the year that you just try to minimise them [issues]. I was actually pretty happy with the position in the end, I was actually figuring out how to drive the car, maybe late.”

Isack Hadjar impressed on his Red Bull debut, qualifying third but still almost eight-tenths behind Russell’s leading time. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc secured fourth, while Oscar Piastri completed the top five for McLaren. Lewis Hamilton will start seventh, managing to stay within a second of pole. Notably, Fernando Alonso had a disappointing session, qualifying 17th, while teammate Lance Stroll was unable to post a time due to difficulties with the Honda power unit.

The grid is set and anticipation builds as teams prepare for an exciting race in Melbourne, a city renowned for its electrifying atmosphere and vibrant F1 culture. As the engines roar to life, the pressure will be on drivers to translate their qualifying form into race-day success.
