Both former players agreed on Fernandes’ outstanding performance this season, under interim manager Michael Carrick. The Portuguese playmaker notably provided two assists in last Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa, which propelled United to third place in the Premier League table.
Neville suggested that Fernandes has thrived since reverting to his natural attacking midfield position, asserting that his previous deeper role did not play to his strengths. “What I would say is, I think playing him in a deeper role in midfield was, to be fair, not right,” said Neville, advocating for Fernandes’ deployment as a No 10.
