Boulter bows out of Australian Open against Bencic
Katie Boulter has exited the Australian Open following a first-round defeat to Swiss 10th seed Belinda Bencic, enduring a difficult match that ended with a scoreline of 6-0, 7-5, reports BritPanorama.
The former British number one faced a particularly challenging first set, which she lost in just 26 minutes. Despite the initial setback, Boulter exhibited considerable resilience in the second set, securing her service games and putting pressure on Bencic.
Boulter, 29, demonstrated a marked improvement in her level of play during the second set, recovering from a challenging start. After being broken, she managed to break Bencic’s serve to level the set at 4-4 before ultimately falling short.
This defeat rounds off a difficult campaign for Boulter in 2025, which has seen her world ranking drop below the top 100. She entered the Australian Open needing late withdrawals from other competitors to ensure her place in the main draw without going through qualifying.
Addressing her performance, Boulter remarked on the difficulties she faced adapting to Bencic’s “unique playing style.” She stated, “It was a really tough first set. I felt like she has such a unique playing style that it took me a moment to kind of adjust and get used to how she hits the ball.”
Despite the disappointing result, she noted the positives from her second set performance, saying, “She ultimately was a class above me. I felt like I was in with a shot in the second and definitely could be playing out there in the third. I think that is my takeaway from it. There are some definite positives. But a lot to learn from.”
Bencic arrived in Melbourne in formidable form, having won all five of her singles matches at the United Cup, marking a return to the top 10 for the first time since March 2023. Her success comes less than two years after the birth of her daughter, Bella.
The Melbourne crowd, supportive of Boulter due to her ties to Australia—she is engaged to world number six Alex de Minaur—afforded her a warm reception throughout the match.
In the end, the competition served as a reminder of the fine margins in professional sport and the continuous challenges athletes like Boulter face in a demanding environment.
