Jutta Leerdam's Olympic suit auctioned for €195,000, setting new record

Jutta Leerdam’s racing suit sells for record €195,000 at auction

The racing suit worn by Dutch speed skating sensation Jutta Leerdam during her triumphant performances at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics has sold for a staggering €195,000 at auction, reports BritPanorama.

Leerdam, 27, donned the bright orange outfit when she claimed gold in the 1,000m event, breaking the Olympic record, and again when she secured silver in the 500m race six days later. The sum achieved at auction has garnered significant attention within the athletics community.

Initially, the highest bid registered just under €10,000 an hour before the auction closed. However, a dramatic last-minute bidding battle ensued, elevating the final price well beyond expectations. Organisers were reportedly astonished by the surge in bids that pushed the price to over €195,000 in just hours.

The winning offer came from a fellow Dutch bidder, and the total sale eclipsed the previous record of approximately €63,000 for a match-worn shirt of Cristiano Ronaldo, which set the standard for auctioned sports memorabilia on the MatchWornShirt platform.

The proceeds from Leerdam’s suit will benefit IJsvereniging Pijnacker, the youth skating club where she began her career. Chairman Johan van Dam expressed his delight, noting, “We are incredibly happy with this and feel a responsibility to carefully consider how we can best use this wonderful amount.”

He added, “This contribution is truly of great significance for our club; we can now allow even more children to experience the joy of skating.” The funds are expected to be directed towards facility improvements and training opportunities for young athletes at grassroots levels.

Leerdam’s suit was not the only high-profile item at the charity auction, organised by TeamNL and the Dutch Olympic Committee. Her closing ceremony jacket fetched €4,826, making it the second highest-selling piece. Teammate Femke Kok’s racing suit sold for €4,602, while bronze medallist Kjeld Nuis’ 1500m final suit went for €1,010. Overall, 86 items from the Dutch speed skating team raised a total of €275,345, with all proceeds aimed at supporting the local sports clubs that nurtured these athletes.

As the dust settles on this landmark auction, one can’t help but reflect on how the world of sports memorabilia continues to captivate collectors and fans alike, bridging the boundary between athletic achievement and economic value. The remarkable price fetched by Leerdam’s suit is a testament to both her extraordinary talent and the cultural significance of sporting success. In a rapidly evolving landscape of sport, this event serves as a momentary reminder of the many threads that connect athletic excellence and community support.
