Joseph Parker faces uncertainty after positive drug test
Joseph Parker’s career has been plunged into uncertainty after it emerged that he returned an adverse finding for cocaine on the day of his heavyweight bout with Britain’s Fabio Wardley, reports BritPanorama.
The 33-year-old’s A sample from a Voluntary Anti Doping Agency test conducted on October 25 showed the presence of a cocaine metabolite. Parker lost to Wardley in the 11th round of their contest at the O2 Arena, a fight that was billed as determining the next challenger for undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk.
Prior to the stoppage, Parker was ahead on the scorecards, a scenario that sparked immediate debate. Now, attention has shifted sharply to the implications of the reported test result. VADA operates under strict protocols, and the boxer’s team will be entitled to request an analysis of the B sample, which could either confirm or dispute the findings.
In most cases, the A and B samples return matching results, though that process has not yet concluded. Traces of benzoylecgonine, the metabolite detected in Parker’s A sample, generally remain in the system only for a limited time and are not regarded as performance-enhancing substances; however, their use is prohibited during competition periods under anti-doping regulations.
If confirmed, the violation could result in a suspension of up to two years, although sanctions will depend on the circumstances of the case and the governing bodies involved. The findings from VADA are expected to be communicated to UK Anti Doping and the British Boxing Board of Control, authorities responsible for adjudicating anti-doping matters in the UK.
A source close to Parker indicated that the news was a shock and highlighted that the training camp had involved family present. The heavyweight remains on holiday with relatives following the bout against Wardley.
Parker, born in Auckland, now resides in Ireland to stay close to coach Andy Lee and his training base in Dublin. He has compiled a distinguished record of 36 wins from 40 professional contests, with his 2016 victory for the WBO title against Andy Ruiz marking a significant milestone in his career.
