Mourinho vows to terminate Prestianni’s contract amid racism allegations
Jose Mourinho has dramatically reversed his position on Benfica star Gianluca Prestianni, pledging to terminate the player’s time at the club should he be proven guilty of directing racist abuse at Vinicius Junior, reports BritPanorama.
The 20-year-old is currently under investigation following allegations made by the Real Madrid forward during last month’s Champions League play-off first leg encounter. Mourinho’s latest stance marks a significant shift from his initial reaction after his side’s defeat to Real Madrid, where he himself received a red card.
Speaking to Amazon Prime Video Sport immediately after that match, he suggested Vinicius should have celebrated his spectacular goal more respectfully instead of provoking opponents. When pressed on whether the Brazilian incites crowds, Mourinho responded, “Yes. I believe so.”
The Portuguese coach also defended his club against accusations of racism, citing Eusebio, the legendary black forward who remains Benfica’s greatest-ever player. He questioned why incidents seem to follow Vinicius everywhere, stating, “There is something wrong because it happens in every stadium. A stadium where Vinicius plays something happens, always.”
Television pundits Wayne Rooney, Clarence Seedorf, and Theo Walcott all responded critically to Mourinho’s post-match comments. Rooney deemed the remarks unfair, suggesting they leave the door open for interpretation. Seedorf accused Mourinho of effectively excusing racist behaviour, asserting, “He’s actually saying it’s OK when Vinicius provokes you to abuse and be racist. And I think that is very wrong.”
Walcott expressed disappointment despite his admiration for Mourinho, stating he was still too emotional and that it was a moment when he should not have spoken. Vinicius condemned those responsible, branding racists as “above all, cowards” who “need to put their shirts in their mouths to show how weak they are.”
His Real Madrid teammates rallied around him, with Kylian Mbappe visibly furious and needing restraint from fellow players. Trent Alexander-Arnold also condemned the incident as “disgusting” and “a disgrace to football,” emphasizing the ongoing nature of such issues throughout Vinicius’s career.
This incident on the European stage not only highlights the ongoing challenges faced by players of colour but also underscores the fine line between sportsmanship and the unacceptable behaviour that can mar the game. As this story unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the need for accountability in football, where the stakes are high, and the actions of individuals resonate beyond the pitch.
