John Toshack's family disputes son’s claims of dementia diagnosis amid health concerns

A bitter family dispute has erupted over the health of Liverpool and Wales icon John Toshack, with his son insisting the 77-year-old has received a formal dementia diagnosis while the football legend and his wife reject such claims, reports BritPanorama.

Cameron Toshack, a football coach based in Thailand, asserted this week that his father is struggling with the condition. He described dementia as “a terrible disease” particularly affecting short-term memory and claimed they speak most days, often with John failing to recall their previous conversations.

Meanwhile, during a recent visit by Spanish journalists to his home in Besalu, Catalonia, both Toshack and his second wife, Mai Angulo, disputed the assertion of a formal diagnosis. The former player responded to the claims with characteristic humour: “Dementia? Not yet!”

Mai, who has been married to Toshack for 33 years, acknowledged the lasting effects of a significant coronavirus infection in 2022, noting that it resulted in severe after-effects both physically and mentally. She expressed frustration at Cameron’s public comments, highlighting that he had not seen his father for two years and only speaks with him occasionally. “That’s why it really surprised me that he said this,” she remarked.

The couple endured a difficult period when Toshack was sedated in intensive care for over ten days, unsure of his recovery. Yet, following these challenges, he appeared in good spirits when welcoming a reporter from El Mundo, showcasing a willingness to engage and joke about his past experiences in football.

Cameron continues to insist on the seriousness of his father’s health status, although he remarked on his father’s remarkable ability to recall details from his illustrious career, particularly regarding his time at clubs like Liverpool, Real Sociedad, and Real Madrid.

This family dispute over John Toshack’s health has unfolded against a backdrop of concern for his well-being, yet it reveals contrasting perspectives shaping the narrative around the former footballer’s condition.

An ongoing saga that underscores the complexities of family dynamics amidst the challenges of ageing, the situation holds a mirror to the intricate relationships that often form around public figures. In sport, as in life, family tensions and love can often exist side by side, each vying for recognition in the story.
