Joe Root highlights dropped catches as key factor in England's struggles against Australia in Ashes Test

Joe Root admits England’s dropped catches cost them in Ashes Test

Joe Root acknowledged that England had only themselves to blame after a series of dropped catches derailed their position in the second Ashes Test at the Gabba, insisting the tourists “worked as hard as we could” to prepare for the day-night conditions but ultimately failed to execute when it mattered most, reports BritPanorama.

England concluded a disjointed second day 44 runs adrift, with Australia reaching 378-6 and firmly in control.

Root’s immediate frustrations centred not merely on the scoreboard but on the five missed opportunities that transformed a manageable position into another uphill struggle.

“We worked incredibly hard,” Root said, clearly bristling at suggestions England had underprepared for the pink ball. “We did a huge amount of catching, especially under lights. Sometimes catches just don’t stick. You’ve still got to want the ball and be ready when the next one comes – that’s the nuance of this format.”

However, the errors were glaring, and Root was acutely aware of them. The first significant miss came in daylight at 30-0, when Travis Head edged a delivery from Jofra Archer. Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith failed to claim the chance, which allowed Head to ignite a 112-run surge in just 14 overs, setting a troubling tone.

Further mishaps occurred under the floodlights. At 290-4, Alex Carey gloved a lifter from Brydon Carse; Ben Duckett got hands to the ball but spilled it. Carey, who was on zero at the time, went on to score 46 not out by stumps. Duckett shelled another chance shortly after at 327-5 as Josh Inglis sent a catch in his direction. Carse also dropped a straightforward opportunity at 346-6, letting Michael Neser off the hook.

Neser ended unbeaten on 15, raising concerns heading into day three. The most troubling miss for Root might have been at 352-6, when Carey edged a delivery through the cordon. Root managed to get fingertips to it, but the wicketkeeper did not move.

“It should have been [Jamie] Smith’s catch,” Root conceded, declining to criticise but providing a pointed assessment: “We all make mistakes. But we have to be decisive.”

Former captain Michael Vaughan, speaking on a BBC podcast, argued that England’s decision not to send players for match practice in the Lions day-night fixture had contributed to the malaise, labelling the team “jaded” and “undercooked.”

Root, however, pushed back strongly. “It’s never perfect. You try to give yourself the best possible chance,” he said. “We’ve adapted to the heat, the surfaces, caught under lights, in daylight, twilight. We’re human — mistakes happen.”

Root also sought to refocus the team on the challenge ahead. “We’ve still got a chance in the game,” he insisted. “If we start well tomorrow, apply ourselves properly and adapt to what the pitch gives us, we can put pressure back on. We just have to make sure the next chance sticks.”

As the Test unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the thin margins that often define success at this level, where each decision and moment can shift the balance dramatically. For England, the next hours may well determine whether they can reclaim momentum or if missed opportunities will haunt them through the remainder of the series.
