Sir Jim Ratcliffe praises Michael Carrick’s interim success at Manchester United

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has expressed admiration for Michael Carrick’s contributions as Manchester United’s interim head coach while remaining non-committal about Carrick’s future in the role, reports BritPanorama.

At the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, Ratcliffe described Carrick’s performance as “excellent,” when asked about his tenure. However, he deflected questions regarding the possibility of Carrick being appointed permanently, stating simply, “Not going there.”

The Ineos chief acknowledged the importance of European qualification as United gears up for a crucial match against Aston Villa on Sunday. “Yes, clearly we’re thinking about that. But there’s still seven or eight games to go. Still a while yet,” he noted.

Since taking over in January following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, Carrick has revitalized the team, leading them to six victories in eight matches, which has seen them rise to third in the Premier League. Before Carrick’s appointment, United had only managed one win out of seven under Amorim’s final weeks.

His tenure began impressively, featuring key wins against Manchester City and Arsenal, and he remained unbeaten through his initial seven matches until a late defeat against Newcastle last weekend. This performance, despite the setback, has positioned Carrick as a frontrunner for the permanent managerial role according to bookmakers.

Carrick has urged his players to focus on the significance of the upcoming match, reminding them that setbacks are part of the game. “It’s always about what’s next, what you’re going to react (like), whether you’ve won, whether you haven’t won,” he said at a recent press conference.

Looking ahead to the clash with Aston Villa, he acknowledged the challenge posed by injuries to several key defenders, including Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt, but remains optimistic with the potential return of Mason Mount, who has been sidelined for two months. “Mason is back with the group, which is fantastic,” Carrick confirmed, citing his return as beneficial for the squad.

As the stakes rise for both teams, with each currently level on 51 points, the outcome at Old Trafford could significantly impact their Champions League ambitions. Sunday’s match promises to be a defining moment in this evolving narrative.
