Jermaine Pennant insists Liverpool will find their form
Jermaine Pennant has asserted that Liverpool will regain their form despite current challenges under manager Arne Slot, reports BritPanorama. The reigning Premier League champions are struggling this season, sitting eight points behind league leaders Arsenal after 11 games.
Fans had hoped Liverpool had turned a corner following a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League, with Alexis Mac Allister scoring the only goal. However, their optimism faded after a heavy 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, marked by goals from Erling Haaland, Nico Gonzalez, and Jeremy Doku.
While some observers have written off Liverpool’s chances this season, Pennant, who played for the club between 2006 and 2009, believes that the team will soon return to form. “With plenty of changes over the summer, it does take time to get used to new players coming in,” he stated. He referred particularly to the transition in the defence following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure and the arrival of new signing Milos Kerkez.
Pennant also highlighted the need for the team to develop new playing patterns with the addition of striker Alexander Isak. He remarked that adjusting to a new environment has proven difficult for both Isak and fellow newcomer Florian Wirtz. “Neither player has adjusted to life in their new surroundings, much to the frustration of both Slot and the club’s supporters,” Pennant noted.
Despite the initial difficulties, Pennant expressed confidence that Wirtz will soon silence his critics. “I am sure he will come good,” he said regarding Wirtz, whose transfer fee was £116 million. “You just only need to look at his record and it speaks volumes as to why Liverpool wanted to secure his signature to play for the club.”
Recent statements from Slot have suggested concerns about Liverpool’s squad depth compared to rivals, despite the significant investments made in new players. Fans have reacted strongly, with some believing his comments are detached from reality. While Pennant acknowledges the context around Slot’s remarks, he insists that the depth in the squad is sufficient. “Liverpool spent a huge amount in the summer,” he said. “It’s just a case of the new players gelling together.” With time and patience, Liverpool supporters will be hoping to see their team back to winning ways in the near future. It’s a chapter still unfolding, as every player’s journey is marked by peaks and valleys that can redefine a season.
