Jermain Defoe appointed manager at Woking

Jermain Defoe has been named the new manager of National League club Woking, securing his first permanent role in charge of a senior team, reports BritPanorama.

The 43-year-old former England and Tottenham striker brings limited experience on the touchline but has had ambitions of moving into management since retiring in 2022. Defoe’s appointment comes as Woking sits in 11th place in the National League standings, with slim chances of making the play-offs this season.

The fifth-tier club confirmed the former Three Lions forward’s position following the departure of manager Neal Ardley and assistant Simon Bassey earlier this month. Defoe had previously gained valuable experience during his playing days at Rangers, where he served as caretaker manager and assisted in coaching.

Since hanging up his boots, Defoe has been working to build his credentials for a career in management. In August 2022, he joined Tottenham’s academy setup, focusing on the Under-18 squad. He left that position in July 2024 to fully pursue managerial opportunities. His decision has now led to the role at Woking.

Defoe inherits a squad that has shown inconsistency this season, yet they remain mathematically in contention for a top-seven finish. Upon his appointment, he expressed enthusiasm, stating, “Woking is a historic club with huge potential, and I’m thrilled to be part of this exciting project. I can’t wait to get started.”

Chairman Todd Johnson cited Defoe’s achievements as a player and his perspective on the game as key reasons for his selection. He believes Defoe can help build upon the club’s existing foundations and guide Woking towards success.

Paul Bracewell, noted for his links to Sunderland and the England national team, will serve as assistant manager. Defoe’s managerial tenure begins immediately, with his first match in charge scheduled for Tuesday evening when Woking hosts Altrincham.

With Defoe at the helm, this could be a pivotal moment for Woking as they aim to revitalise their campaign and perhaps spark a revival worthy of a club steeped in history.
