Jaume Guardeno in intensive care following serious collision during training session

Spanish cyclist Jaume Guardeno remains in intensive care following a serious collision with a vehicle during a training session on Tuesday, reports BritPanorama.

The 23-year-old, who competes for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, was airlifted to Tauli Hospital in Sabadell after sustaining significant injuries in the incident. His team confirmed on Thursday that he is receiving care in the intensive care unit, while medical staff continue to assess his condition.

The accident occurred just days after Guardeno participated in the Volta a Catalunya, one of Spain’s premier World Tour stage races, which concluded on Sunday. Reports indicate that Guardeno struck a stone on the road, causing him to lose control of his bicycle before crashing into an oncoming car. He is understood to have sustained a serious head injury due to the collision.

Emergency services responded quickly, with the cyclist being airlifted for urgent medical attention. His team expressed concern, stating that he “remains in its intensive care unit with serious injuries and awaiting further progress.” The crash happened during routine training following his recent race commitments, raising alarms about cyclist safety on public roads.

Guardeno had shown promise in his career, notably delivering an impressive performance at last year’s Vuelta a España, where he finished 14th overall in his Grand Tour debut. He also placed 29th in the Tour of Catalonia last week, demonstrating significant development as a competitive rider. His performances had anticipated his role in leading Caja Rural-Seguros RGA at the upcoming Tour de France, which would mark both his and the team’s first appearance at the prestigious event.

Caja Rural-Seguros RGA issued a statement expressing solidarity with Guardeno and his family, wishing him a speedy recovery. This incident underscores the ongoing concerns regarding the safety of cyclists on public roads, a topic of mounting relevance given recent high-profile accidents involving professional cyclists.

In a sport where athletes navigate the complexities of road safety and competitive urgency, the harsh reality of potential hazards is highlighted once again. Guardeno’s accident serves as a stark reminder of the precarious balance between ambition and safety on the open roads of cycling.
