Jannik Sinner reflects on Australian Open semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic
Jannik Sinner has admitted his Australian Open semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic “hurt,” having missed out on another Grand Slam final after falling short on Friday, reports BritPanorama.
The world No 2 entered the contest at Rod Laver Arena as the overwhelming favourite but was met with a formidable performance from the 38-year-old Djokovic, who secured a 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory.
After the match, Sinner expressed his disappointment during the post-match press conference. “A lot,” he said when asked how much it hurt, adding, “It was a very important Slam for me. Knowing also the background, it can happen; it was a good match from both of us. I had many chances, couldn’t use them, so it hurts for sure.”
Sinner managed to break Djokovic in the opening game of the match, demonstrating early dominance. However, despite being in the twilight of his career, Djokovic displayed exceptional skill and resilience to reclaim control and turn the match in his favour.
When reflecting on the crucial moments, Sinner noted, “I had my chances; it was in the fifth set. Many break points, couldn’t use them, he came up with some great shots. Decided sometimes a couple of different things.” He recognised the unpredictability of tennis, stating, “That’s tennis, and that’s how tennis works.”
Despite Djokovic’s historical record as the player with the most Grand Slam titles, Sinner acknowledged his opponent’s prowess, saying, “He’s won 24 Grand Slams. We know each other very well, how we play.” Looking ahead, Sinner expressed hope that he could learn from the experience and improve.
Djokovic’s victory secures him a place in the final, where he will face Carlos Alcaraz, a clash that promises to be a compelling showdown between two of the sport’s finest talents. For Sinner, the defeat serves as a reminder of the fine margins in elite tennis; even the smallest slip can make a significant difference in the pursuit of victory.
