Jamie Carragher reflects on past criticism of Casemiro after impressive performance against Fulham

Carragher acknowledges Casemiro’s resurgence in Manchester United win

Jamie Carragher has conceded he misjudged Casemiro after the Brazilian delivered a standout display in Manchester United’s thrilling 3-2 triumph against Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday, reports BritPanorama.

The 33-year-old netted the opening goal and created another in what proved to be yet another impressive outing ahead of his confirmed summer exit. Carragher’s remarks follow a significant turnaround in Casemiro’s form, particularly noteworthy in a season filled with challenges for Manchester United.

“It is now fair to say the football has not left him considering what he’s producing this season in the Premier League,” Carragher told Sky Sports after the match. His assessment extends beyond the Fulham fixture, citing the player’s contributions against Arsenal and Manchester City as evidence of his renewed form.

This change of heart from the former Liverpool defender comes nearly two years after a scathing critique of the midfielder went viral following a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in May 2024. At that time, Carragher declared that Casemiro’s time at the elite level was finished, suggesting he consider moves abroad, stating, “The football has left him.”

During that bleak stretch, Carragher urged Casemiro to transition to leagues like MLS or Saudi Arabia, asserting, “He’s too good of a player to be putting in a performance like that.”

Now, Carragher has offered the midfielder an opportunity to respond directly, acknowledging the shift in his performance. “Casemiro is well within his rights, if he wants to come back at me and say: ‘leave the punditry before the punditry has left you,’ he could definitely get one of those in,” he admitted.

Meanwhile, the Sky Sports analyst also noted a remarkable physical transformation in Casemiro, stating, “He looks a completely different player. He looked like an old man coming to the end of his time as a player.” Casemiro’s recent performances suggest that he is not just contributing to the team’s successes but is also proving critics wrong.

Despite confirmation of his departure, Casemiro has remained a mainstay in interim manager Michael Carrick’s midfield trio alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes, leading to three consecutive victories. Carrick explained that the timing of Casemiro’s exit was premeditated, aimed at providing clarity during his tenure.

As the season progresses, Casemiro’s resurgence serves as a reminder of the unpredictable ebb and flow of football; how swiftly fortunes can change, and just how critical timing can be in sport.
