Jamie Carragher dismisses Gareth Southgate as Manchester United managerial candidate, shocking Thierry Henry

Carragher rules out Southgate as Manchester United manager, leaving Henry shocked

Jamie Carragher has emphatically ruled out Gareth Southgate as a contender for the Manchester United managerial position, leaving Thierry Henry stunned, reports BritPanorama.

When presenter David Jones raised Southgate’s name as a potential candidate on Sky Sports, the former Liverpool defender responded bluntly: “Oh no… he’s not getting that job!” This forthright dismissal elicited an astonished reaction from guest Thierry Henry, who exclaimed “Wow. Wow!” while laughing at Carragher’s comment.

Carragher added: “I hope he’s not watching!” His remarks come amid United’s search for a permanent head coach following Ruben Amorim’s departure earlier this month. Michael Carrick has taken temporary charge and recorded a commendable 2-0 victory against Manchester City on Saturday.

Carragher presented his preferred quartet of candidates to replace Amorim: Julian Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel, Luis Enrique, and Eddie Howe. The former defender extensively evaluated 25 potential managers during the broadcast, ultimately settling on these four. He particularly praised Tuchel, noting that he “still has that energy and drive about him” and has “ruffled feathers” during his time with the national team, emphasising the combative spirit he believes is necessary for the Old Trafford role.

Carragher described Tuchel’s willingness to “go to war” for his club as a quality essential for the next Manchester United manager. Germany’s Nagelsmann was also mentioned as someone “with something to prove” in the game. Others were systematically dismissed: former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp due to his connections to the Anfield club, and Xabi Alonso for similar reasons.

Carragher expressed skepticism about Carlo Ancelotti, currently managing Brazil, citing a lack of the “energy and drive to get United up the league.” Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone was rejected for being a “defensive manager” whose hiring would contradict the club’s attacking ethos. Regarding interim manager Carrick, Carragher stated plainly: “I don’t believe Manchester United can win the league with Michael Carrick as manager,” asserting that “you have to be really special” to lead such a club.

Henry offered a more philosophical perspective on United’s recruitment challenge, suggesting the club lacks clarity regarding its identity and direction. When asked if any eliminated names should return for consideration, the Arsenal legend indicated uncertainty about what United are “about” or what their “DNA is.”

Despite this ambiguity, the pair eventually settled on the four-man shortlist, with Henry declining to advocate for additional candidates. Carragher concluded the discussion with a prediction about United’s potential search outcome, stating, “I think, if you are Manchester United – everyone will want Luis Enrique – I think there is a good chance they could end up with Thomas Tuchel.”

In the ever-evolving landscape of managerial candidates, this lively debate encapsulates not only the challenges facing Manchester United but also the enduring tensions within football’s corridors of power — as everyone looks to reclaim their place in the beautiful game.
