James Rodriguez discharged from hospital after dehydration scare

Colombia’s national team captain James Rodriguez has been discharged from hospital in Minnesota after spending 72 hours under medical supervision due to severe dehydration, reports BritPanorama.

The 34-year-old midfielder fell ill the day after his country’s 3-1 friendly defeat against France in Maryland last Sunday. During the game, temperatures reached approximately 26 degrees Celsius, contributing to the difficult conditions.

Rodriguez was substituted after playing just over 60 minutes of the match. His deteriorating condition prompted medical staff to admit him to a Minnesota hospital for observation the following day, as he displayed symptoms of severe dehydration.

The Colombian Football Federation confirmed on Thursday that the former Real Madrid playmaker required hospitalisation for preventive monitoring and recovery. They emphasized that his condition is unrelated to any footballing activities, insisting it stems from a non-sports-related origin.

Now recuperating at home, Rodriguez is expected to lead his nation in the upcoming World Cup. The federation noted that he is making steady progress, with medical reports indicating a favourable prognosis and steady improvement. Rodriguez, who currently plays for MLS outfit Minnesota United, was instrumental in Colombia’s World Cup preparations, having previously featured against Croatia as well.

The federation reassured supporters that his fitness for the World Cup has not been compromised by any underlying physical issues linked to his competitive performances. Colombia has been drawn in Group K alongside Portugal, DR Congo, and Uzbekistan, where Rodriguez’s experience will be vital.

“We wish James a speedy and full recovery,” concluded the federation’s statement. With over a century of international appearances, his role remains critical to Colombia’s ambitions this summer.

As Colombia gears up for the World Cup with a captain now back on his feet, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the physical demands placed on players, particularly under challenging conditions. The path ahead may be intense, but for Rodriguez, resilience is a trait as vital as any skill on the pitch.
