Jake Paul targets Canelo Alvarez fight amidst recovery
Jake Paul is actively pursuing a blockbuster showdown with Canelo Alvarez as he recovers from the devastating knockout defeat to Anthony Joshua in December that left him with a jaw broken in four places, reports BritPanorama.
The 29-year-old American required surgery to insert four titanium plates following the brutal loss and has been persistently contacting his co-promoter about securing the Mexican superstar as his next opponent.
Nakisa Bidarian, who co-founded Most Valuable Promotions with Paul, stated, “He keeps messaging me about wanting to fight Canelo.” Bidarian remarked that he advised Paul to meet and discuss the right path forward.
Despite his significant injury, Paul remains determined to continue his boxing career after opting to fight Joshua when Gervonta Davis withdrew from their planned exhibition due to domestic abuse allegations. Paul faced considerable challenges, entering the ring at around 160lb, leaving him underprepared against the heavyweight champion.
Paul’s rehabilitation appears to be progressing well, with Bidarian noting he has recently seen videos of Paul training, where he was performing exercises that aid in the recovery of his jaw. While under medical suspension until a physician clears him, Paul aims to resume sparring by June, potentially allowing for a return to the ring in August.
The prospect of a match between Paul and Canelo has been on the table before, with discussions nearly resulting in a Cinco de Mayo bout in Las Vegas last year. However, Canelo ultimately opted for a four-fight agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh.
Recently, Canelo defeated William Scull but faced a points loss to Terence Crawford in September, a result that has fueled Paul’s confidence as he looks to make a significant comeback. Despite acknowledging Crawford’s current status, Paul indicated he has Canelo’s contact details and is eager for the fight.
The commercial potential of a match with Canelo is significant, considering his extensive Hispanic fanbase, which could make it an attractive global crossover event. Bidarian emphasised the importance of proper preparation time moving forward, stating that there are many options depending on whether Paul prioritises title fights or major crossover events.
As Paul navigates through his recovery and aims to capitalise on the fight’s commercial potential, the landscape of boxing is once again poised for a thrilling intrigue that combines entertainment with athletic prowess. With the prospect of high-profile matchups ahead, it remains crucial for Paul to re-establish his footing in the sport.
