Jack Fletcher receives suspension and fine for FA misconduct
Jack Fletcher, the 18-year-old son of Manchester United icon Darren Fletcher, has received a six-match suspension along with a £1,500 fine following an FA disciplinary breach that included a reference to sexual orientation, reports BritPanorama. The young midfielder was also handed an education order after accepting the charge.
The incident occurred during United Under-21s’ EFL Trophy fixture against Barnsley in October, which concluded in a 5-2 defeat for United. Fletcher opened the scoring just seven minutes into the match but was later dismissed with a straight red card as the home side turned the game around in the second half.
In a statement, Fletcher expressed remorse for his conduct, stating, “I am truly sorry for the offensive word that I used in the heat of the moment.” He clarified that while he did not intend to use the term as a homophobic insult, he recognized that such language is unacceptable and immediately apologised after the game.
The FA confirmed that Fletcher admitted the charge and opted for a paper hearing instead of appearing in person. He highlighted that this conduct was out of character: “This momentary lapse of character absolutely does not reflect my beliefs or values,” he added.
Manchester United stated that they have been working closely with Fletcher to enhance his understanding of discriminatory language and its harmful effects. The club noted that he will continue to participate in the Academy’s existing diversity and inclusion programmes, complemented by additional educational training organized by the FA.
Fletcher’s case falls under a specific charge by the FA, which accused him of “acting in an improper manner and/or using abusive and/or insulting words” in violation of Rule E3.1. The governing body classified the offence as an “Aggravated Breach” under Rule E3.2, due to its reference to sexual orientation.
Both Jack and his twin brother Tyler have progressed through the United academy system. Their father Darren, who had a distinguished career at Old Trafford, briefly assumed caretaker responsibilities for the first team earlier this year before returning to his role coaching the Under-18s.
In a sport where conduct on and off the pitch is scrutinized, this incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing dialogues surrounding language and behaviour in professional football — how swiftly careers can be affected by fleeting moments of poor judgment.
