Manchester United’s Jack Fletcher named in squad for Tottenham match
Jack Fletcher, the son of former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher, has been named in the squad to London for Saturday afternoon’s match against Tottenham Hotspur, reports BritPanorama.
The 18-year-old is yet to make his senior debut, but his inclusion in the matchday squad comes amid Kobbie Mainoo’s absence through injury. Mainoo has been the sole academy representative in Ruben Amorim’s squads for the past month, while veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton has seen reduced involvement following the arrival of Senne Lammens.
Fletcher’s selection maintains a long-standing tradition at United, ensuring that at least one academy graduate is named in every first-team squad. This remarkable record now stands at 4,332 consecutive matches, dating back to October 1937, when Tom Manley and Jack Wassall featured in a league match against Fulham.
Amorim has publicly emphasised the importance of the academy, stating, “We want to maintain that. I don’t want to be the guy to break that record. If you see the past of Manchester United, it’s built on kids who grow up here. I think that should be our goal in the future.”
Jack Fletcher joined United from Manchester City in July 2023, signing alongside his twin brother Tyler in a combined deal valued at around £1.25 million. A left-footed midfielder known for his technique and passing range, Jack has also recently been named in the England Under-19 squad for European Championship qualifiers in Lithuania.
His father, Darren, had a distinguished career at Old Trafford, making over 340 appearances for the club from 2003 to 2015, winning six Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2008. He now serves as United’s Under-18s head coach, playing a key role in nurturing the next generation of talent.
The inclusion of Jack is set against a backdrop of scrutiny regarding United’s youth development. INEOS chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe remarked last month that the academy had “slipped” in recent years, stressing the need for a continual supply of homegrown players for the club’s identity and sustainability.
Recent events highlight this trend as several academy graduates, including Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, seek opportunities elsewhere. This includes Scott McTominay, who has found success at Napoli following his £26 million transfer.
Meanwhile, Mainoo’s injury complicates the picture further, as the 20-year-old has yet to start a Premier League match this season. Having faced a denial for a loan move two months ago, Mainoo now strives to reclaim his position in Amorim’s midfield, typically occupied by Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. All eyes now turn to Tottenham, where United aims to build on a recent resurgence from three victories in their last four league matches.
