Jack Draper advances in Indian Wells with victory over Francisco Cerundolo
Jack Draper has secured his place in the Indian Wells last 16 following a commanding 6-1 7-5 triumph over Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo, reports BritPanorama.
The British number one is mounting a remarkable title defence at the California tournament, competing in just his second ATP Tour event since returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to an arm injury that kept him away from competitive tennis for almost eight months.
His victory over the 19th seed sets up a tantalising encounter with Novak Djokovic in the next round, a prospect the young Briton appears to welcome. This forthcoming contest will mark the second occasion these two players have faced each other, their previous meeting at Wimbledon five years ago ending in a four-set defeat for Draper.
“I know what to expect from Novak,” Draper said. “I have been watching him since I was young. He’s obviously, I think, the greatest tennis player of all time. His mentality and just his level of tennis is always incredibly high.” Draper acknowledged the challenge ahead, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to compete at such a high level once more.
Against Cerundolo, Draper swept through the opening set with ease but encountered difficulties in the second, finding himself a break down on two separate occasions. The defending champion conceded he is still seeking greater consistency in his game, something he believes will develop with more match practice. Should Djokovic prevail in their upcoming encounter, Draper would relinquish his position as British number one to Cameron Norrie.
Norrie enjoyed an impressive outing of his own, dispatching sixth seed Alex De Minaur 6-4 6-4 in what proved to be one of his finest displays. The former British number one will face Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata in the fourth round. Additionally, Britain’s second-ranked woman, Sonay Kartal, progressed despite battling back discomfort, overcoming former Australian Open winner Madison Keys 2-6 6-2 6-3.
As the tournament unfolds, the blend of young talent and seasoned contenders highlights the evolving landscape of British tennis, with Draper at the heart of this promising narrative. How he fares against a legend like Djokovic will not only test his skills but may also serve as a defining moment in his early career.
