Jack Draper eliminated from Miami Open as Reilly Opelka dominates in straight sets

Jack Draper’s Miami Open campaign ends with defeat to Reilly Opelka

Jack Draper’s campaign at the Miami Open concluded abruptly on Friday evening, as Reilly Opelka delivered a dominant performance to secure a straight-sets victory, reports BritPanorama.

The 6ft 11in Opelka, currently ranked 67th in the world, showcased his serving strength by firing 25 aces and accumulating 47 winners throughout the 93-minute match. Both sets were decided via tiebreaks, with Opelka prevailing 7-6(3), 7-6(0).

Draper, seeded 25th, recorded only six unforced errors during the match but was ultimately outmatched by Opelka’s powerful deliveries.

After the defeat, Draper acknowledged the prowess of his opponent, stating, “The guy played an incredible match. It’s a difficult one.” This loss marks a challenging juncture for Draper as he navigates his return from a lengthy seven-month injury absence due to a bone bruise.

Entering Miami, Draper had only participated in three ATP events since resuming competition. He noted, “I guess I’m still at the very early stages of coming back from what was a very difficult injury to deal with.” His impressive quarter-final appearance at Indian Wells, which included a win over Novak Djokovic, had raised expectations prior to the tournament.

The Miami Open has traditionally been a difficult venue for Draper, with his best performance yielding no further than the second round. Despite the setback, he maintained perspective, remarking, “If someone said that I’m going to be playing Dubai, Indian Wells, here, and go home feeling good, then I would have taken that, because it’s a long season to go.”

With the clay-court season approaching, Draper faces increasing pressure regarding his world ranking, having lost his position as Britain’s leading male player to Cameron Norrie earlier this week. Currently ranked 26th, Draper risks further declines in the standings due to limited opportunities for accumulating points during his recovery.

As the Wimbledon tournament edges closer, Draper has targeted it as a pivotal moment to regain his competitive momentum. Falling further down the rankings could jeopardize his automatic qualification for the prestigious event.

In other news, Katie Boulter advanced to the third round following a rain-disrupted match against Clara Tauson, who withdrew due to injury while trailing 6-7(4), 6-4, 1-0. Boulter reflected on the encounter, saying, “It was a complete battle – some ugly tennis and ugly conditions as well, but you have to find a way.”

The tournament continues to present a backdrop of both triumphs and challenges for British players, illustrating the nuanced landscape of international tennis.
