Izzy Hammond escapes serious crash during Formula E Evo Series

Izzy Hammond, daughter of former Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond, emerged unscathed from a serious collision during the Formula E Evo Series in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, this afternoon, reports BritPanorama.

The incident occurred when Hammond lost control of her vehicle after the brakes reportedly failed, causing her to crash into a concrete barrier. Despite the severe damage to her car, Hammond confirmed over the radio, “I’m fine, I’m fine.”

The collision took place at Turn 13 as she approached the corner at high speed, resulting in an estimated impact of around 45Gs. The crash destroyed the front wing of her Lola team car and detached one of its wheels.

Debris scattered across the track necessitated the deployment of a safety car while medical personnel assessed the situation. Former Formula One driver David Coulthard, who was commenting on the event, noted that Hammond had drifted offline prior to the impact.

After the crash, Hammond explained that her brakes had failed while attempting to decelerate for the corner. The celebrity-focused racing event aims to engage a wider audience by allowing digital content creators to experience driving Formula E cars firsthand.

Other participants, including Sidemen members Behzinga and Vikkstar, expressed concern as the incident unfolded. The Evo Series, launched last year in Miami, has garnered attention with its lineup of influential drivers.

Hammond, who graduated from the University of Bristol with an English degree in 2023, has established herself as a respected figure in motorsport media. Following the dramatic event, she shared a light-hearted update on social media, posting a photo from her vehicle with the caption: “THAT WAS WILD (CAR IS THE RIGHT WAY UP AND NOT ON FIRE).”

Her involvement in the Evo Series reflects a shift towards broadening the appeal of motorsport, an initiative emphasized by Formula E officials as they strive to introduce the sport to new audiences while navigating the challenges of competitive racing.

As motorsport continues to evolve, incidents like Hammond’s serve as reminders of the fine line between thrill and danger on the track, showcasing the blend of celebrity culture and competitive spirit in this exhilarating arena.
