Ivan Toney expresses desire to join England’s World Cup squad
Ivan Toney has expressed a strong desire to be included in England’s World Cup squad this summer, despite having made just a two-minute appearance since Thomas Tuchel took over as manager. Toney currently plays for Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, having departed the UK in the summer of 2024, reports BritPanorama.
The forward, who has made seven appearances for England, six under Gareth Southgate, had a brief stint on the pitch during a 3-1 defeat to Senegal in June at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground. Despite limited time under Tuchel, Toney remains hopeful about his chances for the World Cup.
During an interview with Sky Sports, Toney articulated, “It would mean a lot [to go to the World Cup]. I have never played at a World Cup. It would be a dream; everyone dreams of that.” He further noted the significant impact that a victory in the tournament would have for the country, adding that “if we were to win it, that would be so big for the country.”
His performances in Saudi Arabia have been impressive, tallying 58 goals from 76 appearances, with 28 goals scored in the current season, including 20 in league play. This scoring prowess places him in a competitive position for the Golden Boot award, alongside prominent players like Cristiano Ronaldo.
Toney spoke about the potential advantages of acclimatisation to the heat in Saudi Arabia, which could benefit him as the World Cup takes place in high temperatures across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. “I’ve played in 30-plus degrees here, and I feel like I’m adapted to it,” he explained, suggesting that his experience could serve him in the global competition.
With high stakes, Toney understands the pressure but intends to focus on maintaining his form, stating, “All I can do is keep scoring goals. That gives me the best chance possible.” He acknowledged that his future may hinge on this opportunity: “It could be my last chance. It’s [about] whatever is best for the country; the coach will pick the team and you have to respect that.”
Despite the allure of a Premier League return, Toney insists he is committed to succeeding at Al-Ahli and aims to help the club win trophies. He remains content in his current environment, stressing, “I’m comfortable here and like being here. I’m doing well, my numbers speak for themselves and I’m settled.” The prospect of World Cup glory, however, looms large, as Toney’s ambitions race in tandem with his impressive form. In football, as ever, the competition for a place in the national squad is fierce, intertwining personal aspirations with the collective hopes of a nation poised for opportunity.
