ITV's question to Eberechi Eze downplays stunning goal in England's win over Serbia

Frustration over interview question after England’s victory

Arsenal fans have reacted with disbelief after a post-match interview question for Eberechi Eze appeared to downplay the midfielder’s stunning goal in England’s 2–0 win over Serbia at Wembley, reports BritPanorama.

Eze curled a superb effort into the top corner in the 90th minute to seal the victory, yet ITV reporter Gabriel Clarke asked whether the routine pass from Phil Foden that preceded the strike had been “the key” to the goal.

This line of questioning prompted frustration among Arsenal supporters on social media, many asserting that Eze’s individual brilliance was overshadowed. One user on X remarked: “Not gaslight a 5 yard pass. If Foden scored with an Eze pass would never be asked that question.”

Another user succinctly added: “Wow, just wow,” while a further fan queried: “How was the ‘key’ to that goal Phil’s pass?” On a lighter note, one joked: “I thought it was amazing that Arsenal fans have got me siding with Sunderland on here last week. Even more incredible that Gabriel Clarke has got me siding with Arsenal fans. Outrageous.”

Eze’s strike followed an equally impressive opener from teammate Bukayo Saka, whose sharp finish helped Thomas Tuchel’s side maintain their flawless World Cup qualifying campaign.

Speaking after the match, Tuchel emphasised the importance of creating a cohesive squad rather than relying on individual star power, stating, “This is not about building a starting XI, it’s about building a team.” He acknowledged the need for players to set aside their egos to contribute to the team’s success.

England, who have already qualified for next summer’s tournament in North America, will travel to Tirana with an unblemished record. With the squad’s growing confidence in Tuchel’s approach, the focus will now shift to maintaining their momentum as they prepare for their next challenge.

As for Eze, he expressed his delight after netting for his country: “It was important to get the win. I’m happy to score and help the team which is important.” In this reflective moment, perhaps it serves as a reminder of how the nature of football, like life, often centres around acknowledging individual contributions while working towards a collective goal.
