Iran confirms withdrawal from 2026 World Cup amid conflict

Iran’s Sports Minister has confirmed that the nation will not participate in the 2026 World Cup after war broke out between Iran and the US, reports BritPanorama.

Ongoing joint American and Israeli military strikes against Iran have been reported since February 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate amid escalating regional turmoil.

In a televised statement, Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamal stated, “Since this corrupt government assassinated our leader, we have no conditions under which we can participate in the World Cup. In view of the malicious measures taken against Iran, two wars were forced upon us within eight or nine months, and several thousand of our people were killed. Therefore, we definitely have no possibility of participating in this way.”

This decision comes despite FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s announcement that US President Donald Trump had assured FIFA that Iran is “welcome” to compete. Earlier this month, Trump expressed indifference about Iran’s potential participation.

Following a recent meeting between Trump and Infantino, the FIFA president revealed on social media, “During the discussions, President Trump reiterated that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States. We all need an event like the FIFA World Cup to bring people together now more than ever.”

Iran was scheduled to play all three of their group G matches in the US against Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. Now, they are likely to be replaced by either Iraq or the United Arab Emirates, as FIFA has the discretion to select a substitute team from the Asian Football Confederation to maintain regional balance.

As the 2026 World Cup nears, with its historic increase in participating teams, the void left by Iran’s withdrawal adds another layer to the tournament’s already complex geopolitical backdrop. It’s a poignant reminder of how global events can reverberate through the world of sport, where even the lightest of matches can ignite fierce debates.
