Investigation into South Yorkshire Police for alleged harassment of Rotherham grooming gang victim

Independent police oversight body investigates harassment allegations against Rotherham victim

The police watchdog is investigating allegations of harassment, trolling and a threat against a Rotherham grooming gang victim, reports BritPanorama.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has initiated two investigations regarding South Yorkshire Police’s actions last year. The enquiries focus on whether the police were involved in online harassment, stalking, and the leaking of personal information about the victim.

Additionally, the IOPC is examining allegations of a threat made over the phone to the survivor in 2019. The victim, known as Elizabeth, was subjected to abuse in Rotherham during her teenage years in the early 2000s. Only one man has faced prosecution, being jailed in 2018 following an investigation by the National Crime Agency into his role in the sexual assaults.

Following concerns from several survivors regarding the internal investigation of its own personnel, the IOPC’s investigation was passed on to the National Crime Agency. Elizabeth expressed frustration over the lack of suspension of an officer she had named during the investigation, arguing that this undermines accountability and poses a risk to public safety. She stated, “When police officers are not suspended and allegations are not taken seriously, it sends a dangerous message that accountability is optional.”

Social media posts related to the harassment have surfaced, disclosing deeply personal information about Elizabeth that she claims jeopardises her security. An IOPC representative acknowledged the bravery of victims in coming forward, emphasizing the importance of addressing their concerns.

As of now, no conduct matters have been identified against any specific officer involved in the ongoing investigations. South Yorkshire Police has committed to cooperating fully with the IOPC’s efforts. The police stated, “Should their assessment indicate that an officer has breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour which amount to misconduct or gross misconduct, we will take necessary and proportionate steps in line with the Police Conduct Regulations 2020.”

In this complex case, the nature of accountability within policing continues to provoke critical scrutiny and highlight the lasting impact of past failures, serving as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by survivors seeking justice.
