International Olympic Committee to ban transgender women from female competitions
Transgender women are reportedly set to be banned from competing in female competitions, following a review by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that concluded there are permanent physical advantages associated with being born male, reports BritPanorama.
The IOC is expected to announce this ban early next year, marking a significant shift in the regulations governing participation in Olympic sports. Previously, individual Olympic sports had the discretion to determine whether transgender women could compete, typically allowing those with reduced testosterone levels to participate.
Athletics and swimming currently enforce their own bans on athletes who have undergone male puberty, while other sports are yet to implement similar restrictions. According to reports, IOC president Kirsty Coventry is believed to have advocated strongly for these changes, aiming to “protect the female category.”
In a recent meeting in Lausanne, Dr. Jane Thornton, the IOC’s medical and scientific director, presented the evidence supporting this policy shift. Sources have described the presentation as factual and devoid of emotion, receiving positive feedback from committee members. While the ban is expected to be formalized around the IOC session at the Milan-Cortina winter Olympics in early February, reports suggest that additional work will be required to ensure the policy’s legal robustness.
