Imane Khelif posts training video amid IOC's new sex testing regulations for female athletes

Imane Khelif has signalled intent to defend her Olympic title at the 2028 Los Angeles Games by posting an intense training video on Instagram, reports BritPanorama.

The Algerian boxer showcased a demanding workout routine just days after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced mandatory sex testing for all athletes wishing to participate in women’s events. Under the new IOC regulations, competitors with Disorders of Sex Development must demonstrate they gain no advantage from elevated testosterone levels.

The 26-year-old welterweight champion, who possesses naturally high testosterone and uses medication to lower it, has expressed a willingness to comply with any required testing to secure a spot in the upcoming Olympics. Khelif’s coach Karim Ya accompanied the training post with an inspiring caption: “Nothing is easy. Everything is deserved. Every workout counts. Every effort brings you closer to the battle.”

The footage garnered significant encouragement from her 1.7 million followers on Instagram, reflecting the substantial public interest in Khelif as she navigates the ongoing gender eligibility controversy that marked her previous Olympic victory. After claiming welterweight gold at the Paris Olympics last summer, Khelif faced questions about her eligibility following a gender test administered by the International Boxing Association the previous year.

Upon returning to Algeria with her medal, she asserted: “I am fully qualified.” In interviews, Khelif has reaffirmed her identity, stating, “I am a woman like any other woman. I was born a woman, I lived as a woman, I competed as a woman – there is no doubt.” She confirmed to CNN that she is prepared to adhere to all testing requirements: “Of course, I would accept doing anything I’m required to do to participate in competitions.”

Khelif has also responded to comments from figures like Donald Trump, who has labeled her a “male boxer” stemming from his executive order titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports.” Khelif maintains that she was born female and possesses the SRY gene, which is associated with male sex chromosomes, complicating the discourse surrounding her eligibility.

As the IOC implements these new testing measures, it remains to be seen how they will affect the landscape of women’s sports, particularly for athletes like Khelif who are navigating the intricacies of identity and performance. With the clock ticking towards the next Olympics, Khelif’s resolve and the scrutiny she faces highlight a pivotal moment in the intersection of sports, gender, and policy — a reminder that the path to competition can be as challenging as the contest itself.
