Igor Tudor reflects on Tottenham’s thrilling victory over Atletico Madrid
Igor Tudor has opened up on his angry touchline outburst towards the end of Tottenham’s thrilling 3-2 Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid. The Croatian was visibly furious in the final stages of the contest as Spurs finally secured their first win of his tenure, reports BritPanorama.
Many expected Spurs to be overwhelmed, especially given their previous collapse against the same opponents just a week earlier. However, there were signs of improvement in recent matches, and the victory was well-deserved, with Xavi Simons scoring twice and Randal Kolo Muani also contributing to the scoreline.
This win marks a significant moment for Tudor, who has faced challenges in motivating his squad since replacing Thomas Frank in the dugout last month. He admitted that his intense desire to secure the win resulted in him losing his composure during Atletico’s last counterattack.
“I agree, I agree it was important. That’s why I was angry about the counter attack in the last minute,” Tudor said in the post-match press conference. “We go with nine… I got a little bit angry there because in the last minute at least you wanted to take this, but I understand the players wanted to score a goal.”
Despite the pressure, Tudor expressed relief and satisfaction at the victory, commenting, “It was nice in the end to at least take the victory. What you said, it’s important also for the morale.” Tottenham have now managed to avoid defeat in their last two matches, and Tudor believes their hard work is beginning to show results. “You work, you work, you work, and then there is a game that shows what you work for,” he added.
Tudor also appeared cautious, acknowledging that while recent performances indicate improvement, there is still much to accomplish. He noted, “Of course, the last two games we improved, but as I said two games before, it’s impossible to judge these two games because what happened in the first 20 minutes against Madrid last week, there is nothing about the coach, team, tactics, training.”
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone remained upbeat despite the defeat, stating, “It is a time to be happy. As a club, as a team, with the joy that our people will take this progress to the quarter-finals.” He continued, “The road when you enter the quarter-finals will be hard, as in the previous situations that we had to reach the final.”
As the Champions League progresses, this match serves as a reminder of the excitement and unpredictability that defines football, highlighting both the fragility of confidence and the potential for redemption on each pitch.
