Idrissa Gueye sent off after clash with teammate

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye was sent off in the 13th minute against Manchester United after clashing with his own team-mate, reports BritPanorama.

Following a missed shot by United captain Bruno Fernandes from outside the box, tensions flared among Everton players. Defender Michael Keane confronted Gueye, leading to an exchange in which Gueye appeared to hit Keane.

The referee witnessed the incident and issued a red card for Gueye, while Keane escaped punishment. This situation exacerbated Gueye’s temper, prompting further confrontation with his teammate.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford intervened to restrain Gueye, who subsequently exited the field at Old Trafford. VAR confirmed that a red card was warranted for Gueye’s actions, which involved striking Keane in the face.

Despite the sending-off, Keane continued to argue with Gueye, instructing him to leave the pitch in blunt terms. This incident follows a difficult start for Everton at Old Trafford, which had already seen Seamus Coleman leave the match due to injury.

TV replays showcased the confrontation, revealing Gueye’s strike on Keane; however, the action appeared mild. Premier League regulations mandate a red card for any strike to the face, regardless of severity. Former United player Gary Neville commented on the incident, questioning the force of Gueye’s slap and suggesting it may have warranted only a yellow card.

Historically, player confrontations are not uncommon, with previous notable instances, such as Dyer and Bowyer’s infamous clash at Newcastle in 2005, marking the extreme of such on-pitch altercations. More recent examples of teammate disputes include Arsenal’s Ben White and Oleksandr Zinchenko and Anwar El Ghazi and Tyrone Mings at Aston Villa.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Everton made a surprising impact when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall struck a brilliant goal from outside the box, showcasing the team’s resilience.

This event serves as a stark reminder of how volatile the dynamics can be within a team, where even the closest companions on the pitch can find themselves at odds in the heat of the moment. Football, as ever, combines the unpredictable with the profound; it’s a game that tests not only athletic skill but also the very bonds that unite players.
