Idrissa Gueye criticizes CAF's AFCON ruling, claims Senegal deserved the title

Controversy as Senegal stripped of Africa Cup of Nations title

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye has launched a fierce attack on the Confederation of African Football following their decision to strip Senegal of their Africa Cup of Nations crown, reports BritPanorama.

The governing body awarded the title to Morocco earlier this month, two months after the contentious final concluded with Senegal celebrating on the pitch. Gueye expressed his disbelief, stating, “I think this decision is just ridiculous. We won the game on the pitch, not in the offices, and as a Senegalese player, I’m just proud of what we did.”

He insisted that his nation earned their triumph through sheer determination, highlighting the emotional weight of their performance. The dramatic final took place in Rabat on 18 January, where Senegal had a goal from Ismaila Sarr ruled out, causing significant controversy. In a moment of heightened tension, El Hadji Malick Diouf was penalised for holding Brahim Diaz, leading to coach Pape Thiaw’s protest, and ultimately, Senegal briefly left the pitch before returning to continue the match.

Despite these challenges, Senegal secured a victory in extra time, with Pape Gueye netting the winner after denying Diaz a successful penalty. However, the situation escalated when Morocco lodged an appeal, resulting in Senegal’s original victory being overturned, recorded as a 3-0 administrative win for the hosts. This ruling has provoked widespread criticism, with Gueye expressing serious concerns regarding its impact on how Africa’s premier tournament is perceived globally.

Gueye suggested that those behind the ruling may hold anti-African sentiments, stating, “People who take this decision they are maybe against Africa, because Africa doesn’t need this type of decision.” The midfielder underscored that the controversy invites comparisons with other major continental championships, asserting, “Everyone has started to talk about AFCON and compare it against Europe and the Copa America. I think Africa doesn’t deserve this.”

The Senegalese Football Federation has announced plans to challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, while several squad members responded to the ruling by showcasing their winners’ medals on social media. Former Liberia striker George Weah also voiced criticism, aligning with Gueye’s sentiments.

Despite the acrimony surrounding the decision, Gueye maintains a warm relationship with Everton teammate Adam Aznou, who represents Morocco at international level. He noted how they have found humour in the extraordinary circumstances, joking about bringing his medal for Aznou next time they meet. “We are all brothers and no-one can push me to hate Morocco’s people. Morocco and Senegal have a good relationship,” he asserted.

The unfolding drama highlights the fragility of sporting integrity and the far-reaching implications of administrative decisions, reminding spectators that the lines between sport and politics can often be blurred.
