Ibrahima Konate reveals his father's passing as reason for missed Champions League match

Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate announces father’s passing

Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate has revealed the passing of his father, Hamady, in a poignant message shared on Instagram this afternoon, reports BritPanorama.

The 26-year-old French defender was notably absent from the Reds’ Champions League triumph against Marseille on Wednesday evening, with the club confirming he had returned to his homeland to attend to a family matter.

In his announcement, Konate, a practising Muslim, accompanied his message with the words: “To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return.” His absence from the match remained unexplained until this recent announcement, which has shed light on the personal circumstances surrounding his withdrawal from the squad.

The funeral prayer, known as Salat al-Janazah, is scheduled for tomorrow, following Friday prayers. Konate’s Instagram post included a hadith from Islamic tradition: “The Messenger of Allah said: There is no deceased person for whom a group of Muslims, numbering one hundred, pray, all supplicating for him, without their requests (for the deceased) being accepted.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot addressed Konate’s absence during his post-match interview, expressing sympathy for the situation. “First of all, for the family matter, why he is not here, it is very sad for him,” the Dutch head coach remarked. He also noted the tactical implications of losing the preferred centre-back partnership of Konate and Virgil van Dijk.

In the match against Marseille, Joe Gomez stepped in to fill the central defence position, a role he has not frequently occupied in recent months. Konate’s father played a significant role in his son’s footballing journey, offering guidance that the defender has cherished throughout his career. “Become someone good,” was the advice Hamady gave Konate when he left for Sochaux’s academy at just fifteen years of age.

Reflecting on his progression, Konate recalled a time during his development when a supervisor praised him as unique within twenty years of working in football. “I took a screenshot and kept it because I knew I had fulfilled the mission my father gave me,” he shared, underscoring the profound influence Hamady had on his life both on and off the pitch.

As the football community rallies around Konate during this difficult time, it serves as a reminder of how sport can intertwine with personal life, evoking profound connections that extend beyond the pitch and into the fabric of family. Such moments challenge players, not just in their careers, but in their very identities as they navigate the complexities of loss and legacy.
