Kai Havertz rescues Arsenal with late penalty against Bayer Leverkusen

Kai Havertz converted a penalty in the 89th minute to secure a 1-1 draw for Arsenal against Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at the BayArena, reports BritPanorama.

Havertz, who previously played for Leverkusen before his £71 million transfer to Chelsea in 2020, made a significant impact after entering as a substitute. The crucial penalty was earned by fellow substitute Noni Madueke, who was fouled by Malik Tillman during a driving run into the penalty area. Despite protests from Leverkusen’s supporters, the referee upheld the decision following a VAR review.

Havertz dispatched the penalty past goalkeeper Janis Blaswich with composure, although his celebration was muted in acknowledgment of the team he had spent a decade with. This late goal was vital for Arsenal, especially given that they entered the match with an unbeaten run in this season’s Champions League, having won all eight group phase encounters.

However, Arsenal’s defensive structure faltered shortly after half-time. Leverkusen’s Robert Andrich scored from an inswinging corner delivered by Alex Grimaldo, marking the first goal Arsenal had conceded in the current Champions League campaign just 45 seconds after the restart. Prior to that, Arsenal had made a promising start, with Gabriel Martinelli striking the crossbar during a well-executed counter-attack.

Throughout the match, Arsenal struggled to maintain creativity, managing only six shots total, with Havertz’s penalty being their second on target. The visitors faced challenges in penetrating Leverkusen’s defence, underscoring the adjustments needed moving forward.

Madueke spoke optimistically about the second leg, stating, “We came here to try to win, but when you can’t it’s good to draw. We’re fully confident heading back to the Emirates; we can get the job done back in London.” He expressed trust in Havertz’s abilities, noting, “I had 100 per cent confidence in him.”

As both teams prepare for the return fixture at the Emirates Stadium, the draw leaves Arsenal hopeful yet aware of the need to improve their performance. The promise of a competitive second leg looms large, reflecting the unpredictable nature of knockout football.
